A Faraway Island is about two sisters: Stephie who is 12, and Nellie who is 7, who move to Sweden to flee Germany occupation during WWII. Stephie and Nellie’s parents are left in Germany while the girls flee to Sweden. Nellie and Stephie hoped to live together as a family in Sweden, but are separated into different houses. Even though the sisters are in different houses they see each other everyday because their foster parents are cousins. Nellie who learns to fluently speak the new language of Swedish, she has no problem making friends and is popular along the other children. Stephie is different, she has a very hard time adapting to the new culture of Sweden. Through all of the bad times and all of the good, the only thing keeping their family together is the hope of being reunited again.
In my opinion, this is a wonderful book. I love the educational value of the factual events weaved into the characters’ lives to help show how people felt in the time.
